Our Vision
East Hill Baptist Church is a multicultural gathering with a clear sense of worship and a strong emphasis on community, the understanding of what it means to be God’s family.
Our desire is to use our prominent high street building to provide a welcoming environment for Christians and non-Christians alike and for all ages and all backgrounds to join together in this journey as we learn and grow in exploring more about what it means to live life to its fullest.
We are committed to practical evangelism and personal discipleship in engaging all peoples with the message of Jesus.
‘Embracing Wandsworth for Jesus’ reflects the passion and desire of our heart and mission for this community we live in.
Our Past
East Hill Baptist Church has a long history in Wandsworth. In 1859, a few local residents contacted Charles Spurgeon, who is still considered a great Baptist theologian and churchplanter. Spurgeon and these visionaries founded the church which started meeting in a room behind the Spread Eagle pub.
The church opened its first building in 1862. This original structure was demolished in 1994 and replaced with a more modern, functional facility. Our eldest church member is 94 and has been at East Hill for decades!
Certainly, we have changed many things over the years - worship style, decorations, events - but one thing has not changed:
We continue to strive to achieve the same vision that Spurgeon had: being a church that serves and reaches Wandsworth for Christ.
Our Beliefs
The Bible challenges us to "be prepared to give an answer to anyone who asks." Since you have clicked on this tab, we assume that you'd like to know a little bit more about what we believe before you come along to meet us.
We come from a variety of backgrounds and walks of life, but there are two primary things that unite us:
We believe first and foremost that anyone who confesses faith in the death and the resurrection of Jesus Christ and yields control of their life to Him enters into fellowship with God - for this life and the next.
We believe that the Bible is inspired by God and provides us a manual that we can base our lives upon.
East Hill Baptist church is a Protestant, Evangelical church. It is:
a member of the London Baptist Association
affiliated with the South-West Group of Baptist Churches, which is a group of Christian churches close to us from a variety of denominations
a member of the Baptist Union of Great Britain and Ireland
In a world of relativism, voicing one's beliefs often means the end of conversation. We are quite open to listening to your perspective and hope you will come meet us regardless of what you believe and we can discuss these things further.
If you are a Christian already, you may have specific questions about certain aspects of the way we worship or further questions about our theology. Please come along and we can talk further in person, or you can contact the pastor for a copy of our church constitution. In the meantime, you might like to know that:
We serve Communion (which at our church consists of a small piece of bread and non-alcoholic wine) on the third Sunday of every month. All who believe that we are saved by grace through faith in a risen Christ are invited to share in this symbol of our faith.
Baptism by immersion in water in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit are performed by the pastor for anyone who has professed repetence towards God and faith in our Lord Jesus Christ who "died for our sins according to the Scriptures, was buried, and rose again on the third day."
